Currently, the top 10 US companies, including tech giants like Apple and Microsoft, make up nearly one-third of the major US stock market index - the S&P 500. However, will their reign at the top last? If history is any indication, the answer is no.

Historical Top Performers

In the early 20th century, railroads were the dominant industry. However, they were eventually overtaken by chemical conglomerates in the mid-20th century, which were then replaced by auto giants like Ford and General Motors.

The Market Today:  Primarily Tech

Today’s champions are primarily tech companies. They have strong balance sheets and competitive advantages, but they also face potential threats. For example, Google and Facebook are currently under scrutiny from antitrust regulators, which could impact their market dominance.

The Bottom Line

Markets are dynamic, and the winners and losers are always in flux. Just because something has worked well recently does not mean that trend will continue. The current concentration in a few large tech companies could pose significant risks if these companies fail to maintain their dominance.

Studying market trends and being open to new information as trends shift is something important to consider when building a portfolio and identifying potential opportunities in the market.
